INTRO
Alex, a freshman at a university in Columbus, Ohio, has fallen in love with a girl named Ellen. He met her while asking out her roommate Tricia at the dorm. Alex is crazy about Ellen despite the fact that she is a very different person than he is. While Alex is a money-minded kind of guy, majoring in economics and hoping to work in a big bank one day, Ellen is an artist who likes ballet and horse-riding.

One evening there’s a big dance during which Alex talks Ellen into dancing with him. During the dance they kiss but then Ellen suddenly runs out of the dance hall. Alex finds out that she is about to marry a guy in her hometown. Although Alex suspects she has feeling for him, there isn’t much he can do but wait how it all plays out.

Still, he can’t keep his mind off Ellen, who is taking a train tonight to her boyfriend’s place to prepare the wedding. While getting ready to go to a faculty dinner, Alex talks to his mother and tells her about his troubles. His mother’s response opens his eyes and Alex decides to get into his car and drive over to the train station where Ellen’s train will be arriving in about eight hours’ time.

Toto intro je sice psáno hovorovým jazykem, v mluvené podobě by přesto některé věty asi neobstály (třetí odstavec: “while getting ready” by spíše zaznělo jako celá vedlejší věta “while he’s getting ready” a plynulost proslovu a přirozenou návaznost by zesílilo nějaké to anyway (na začátku druhého odstavce: anyway, there was a big dance…) a určitě by na některých místech zaznělo i zesilující actually a další linking words
ALEX MEETS ELLEN: ALL TIED UP
Alex: Mom, I want you to know I’m through feeling sorry for myself and this little episode is over.
Elyse: It’s about time. What little episode?
Alex: It doesn’t matter, mom. After all, this is one of the biggest nights of my life and nothing is going to prevent me from enjoying it. I’ll be in my tuxedo, hobnobbing with the economics faculty, the best girl by my side. Everything’s gonna be perfect. Just perfect. If I could just tie this damn tie! Who am I kidding?
Elyse: I’m sure your dad has a clip-on you can borrow.
Alex: It’s not the tie, mom.
Elyse: Well, you want to talk – I’m still here.
Alex: I guess so. I got nowhere else to turn. Mom, do you remember that girl I told you about a few weeks ago? Ellen Reed?
Elyse: Not sure. Oh, Tricia’s roommate. the one you didn’t like.
Alex: Right, the one I didn’t like. The one I still don’t like.
Elyse: What about her?
Alex: I’m in love with her.
Elyse: Really? Oh, Alex, it’s wonderful.
Alex: It’s not wonderful, mom. Right now, she’s on a train traveling three hundred and fifty miles to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to marry another guy.
Elyse: That’s a tough thing to overlook.
Alex: I don’t know, mom. I mean, love. It’s my first time. I mean, sure I loved that dog we had when I was a kid. But in many ways, this is different.
Elyse: I hope so.
Alex: It’s not fair, mom. It’s just not fair. What did i ever do to deserve this? I mean, I was minding my own business and all of a sudden I find myself in love with a wonderful girl I can never be with.
Elyse: Oh sweetie…
Alex: You’re smiling, mom. My life is falling apart and you’re smiling.
Elyse: I’m sorry honey, it’s just… it’s so beautiful to hear you express those feelings. And this is the first time I have really seen your dad in you. Can I ask you something? Does Ellen know about this? I mean, does she know how you feel?
Alex: I don’t think so. I wanted to tell her before she left but I didn’t.
Elyse: It’s a shame.
Alex: You think it would have made a difference if I’d told her? Damn, I should have told her.

Ve třech minutách dobře zvoleného videa najdete obrovské množství materiálu k výuce, o čemž doufám svědčí mnou zvolený příklad. Pokud učitel pouští svým studentům dvacetiminutové epizody vcelku, pak je zřejmé, že vůbec nechápe, jaké poznatky by si ze scénáře studenti měli odnést. Namísto nich nejspíše soustředí svou pozornost na “nová slovíčka”.

a je pravda, že většina z nich jsou užitečné kousky (i nadále ovšem přetrvává mé podezření, že mnohý učitel by se jako homing device upnul spíše na clip-on, hobnob a tuxedo). V textu se ovšem nachází mnoho ne-slovíčkových zajímavostí, kterým se podíváme na zoubek v sekci point-out a to především v souvislosti s vysvětlením mých zásad při výběru
JAK URČUJU, ŽE JE NĚCO INN neboli jak se rozhoduju, že se v tom či onom případě jedná o natolik zajímavý obrat/spojení/slovo, že je třeba je vytučnit v textu (případně vynechat ve fill-long doplňovačce ) a upozorňovat na něj při point-outu?jednoduše se ptám sám sebe:
1. je třeba jej znát? (nebo snad existuje lepší možnost či plnohodnotná alternativa) do této kategorie spadá i “je třeba jej znát, protože a) souvisí s jinými gramatikami, které by studenti měli zvládnout b) jednodušší / učebnicová varianta je idiotská a studenti ji používají tak často, že z toho mně i jejich posluchačům olézá hlava” příklad: it had to be said / it was necessary to say it … I wish you were older / it’s a pity you aren’t… “ano, je třeba jej znát” tudíž INN
2. uměl jsem sám tento obrat používat? (než jsem pochopil, že nemá cenu učit se anglicky z učebnic a začal se učit z původních textů) … Ne, tudíž inn
3. použil jej někdy sám od sebe některý student? … ne, tudíž INN
4. (uvedeno až nakonec, ale ve skutečnosti samozřejmě kritérium číslo jedna) jedná se o životaschopný obrat? nebude působit divně, pokud jej bude používat student na této úrovni? Není příliš formální? Neexistuje lepší alternativa, kterou bych jej mohl nahradit?
