Kvalita angličtiny, tedy ve smyslu přínosnosti textu, by měla hrát hlavní roli i u písniček. Ve skutečnosti téměř nikdy nehraje. Učitelé zatoužící vyučovat pomocí písňových textů neomylně sahají po “pěkných melodických písničkách, které každý zná”. Jinými slovy se studenti vždy dočkají nejznámějších hitů jako z playlistu Radiožurnálu. Slzy v nebi, nějací Beatles, Lav Hrrrts, adult-oriented-rock, kterým učitel říká: podívejte se, já mám tu moderní hudbu taky rád, jsem jedním z vás. Hlavně nikoho neurazit a zajistit, aby se studenti při poslechu zasnili nebo si podupávali do rytmu. Najít vhodnou písničku pro použití v hodinách je přitom poměrně těžký úkol.

Vezměme si za příklad katalog skladeb Beatles. O kvalitě skladeb se není třeba dále rozepisovat. O kvalitách většiny textů také ne, i když z jiných důvodů. Učitelé nicméně do hodin tvrdošíjně vybírají tytéž skladby: třeba Let it Be, nejodpornější a nejrozplizlejší klišovitý text, jaký kdy mé ucho slyšelo

co konkrétně se z tohoto konkrétního textu mají studenti naučit? Mother Mary comes to me? broken-hearted people of the world? ostatně právě této písni kladu za vinu, že zde nikdo neumí použít spojení “leave sb alone”, všichni jsou totiž vychováni poslechem této skladby: “hey, let me be”

V raných skladbách Beatles se zase nejprimitivnější možná angličtina s nulovým přínosem pro studenta

Mísí s obraty, které jsou formální a jsou použity kvůli rytmu nebo rýmu a s obraty, na které student mimo píseň nikdy nenarazí a jejichž použití vyvolá na tváři rodilého mluvčího shovívavý úsměv

love me do … please please me … had it been another day (zbytek sloky ovšem velmi hodnotný) … ticket to ride … a hard day’s night

Beatles přitom sepsali jazykově pozoruhodné texty, kterých by šlo využít v hodinách. Jenomže to by učitel musel nahlédnout kousek za modré a červené dvojalbum. Zajímavé mimochodem je, že třeba text Yesterday je v mnoha ohledech na výuku jako dělaný, i když na první pohled trochu nenápadný, zastíněný otřepanou melodií

Rozumný učitel se nicméně vyhne hitům a vybere si do hodiny třeba skladbu I’m so Tired nebo She’s Leaving Home. I v těchto textech musí ale osvědčit zdravý instinkt, aby se vyhnul všudepřítomné pasti “nových slovíček” (podtržené, nepodstatné) a soustředil se na skutečně důležité jevy (zvýrazněné)

A to už vůbec nemluvím o skladbách, které nešíří rozhlasové vlny, a kterými je tudíž většina naší populace, včetně učitelů, zcela nezasažena. Málokterý z učitelů je asi obeznámen s texty Boba Dylana, Paula Simona, Suzanne Vega nebo Lou Reeda, z nichž mnohé by mohly posloužit jako skvělé výukové materiály.

Jako příklad výborného textu uvedu důkladně nehitovou skladba Lou Reeda “No Chance – Regret”, ve které se nachází celá pokladnice užitečných anglických spojení

Stejně jako u cartoons nebo videa je zde ale problém v tom, že pokud chcete skladbu studentům pustit, nelze text upravovat. V každém textu jsou přitom hluchá místa i nepříliš užitečné obraty, které bychom v normálním textu s chutí nahradili něčím přínosnějším.
