The Ozarks je krátký příběh o výletu mladého muže jménem Sidney do této přírodní rezervace, která se nachází ve státě Missouri a zasahuje do dalších tří států. Tato verze je určena pro učitele, kteří by mohli mít zájem článek použít ve svých hodinách. Upozorňuju, že nejde o klasický učebnicový text typu

Texty tohoto typu necháváme tvůrcům encyklopedií a zvráceným autorům přijímacích testů. Naše vyprávění se soustředí spíše na Sidneyho účast v telefonické soutěži a následné setkání s netopýry a drzým skunkem.
V prvním oddíle se podíváme na samotný článek, poslechneme si audio-verzi, naznačíme, která slovíčka je třeba vysvětlit před samotným přednesem, a přidáme pár dalších základních informací a tipů. V druhé části pak uvedeme doprovodná cvičení, tiskové verze, vypíchneme nejzajímavější gramatické jevy a jiné atrakce.

Sidney has won a free ticket to an amusement park in a radio contest. Sidney doesn’t go to amusement parks too often. In fact, he hates that kind of entertainment. This is different, however. The ticket will allow him to go see a famous cave near the park. Sidney picks up the ticket and sets out, without knowing where exactly he’s going to spend the night once he gets to the Ozarks.

Well, let me show you … There’s this interesting region called the Ozarks that covers a large part of Missouri but also parts of some other states such as Arkansas and Oklahoma. Anyway, Sidney was listening to the radio one day and they were having a contest. People were calling in and guessing what the name of the biggest cave is in the Ozarks. You see, there’s a lot of amazing caves there. So Sidney called in, got the answer right and won a free ticket to the cave, whose name by the way is Marvel Cave. Ok, why don’t I tell you a little more about the Ozarks…

I used to go to school in the Ozarks. The Ozarks is very hilly and rocky. It looks kind of like the Black Hills of South Dakota except there are more lakes and rivers in the Ozarks than there are in the Black Hills. And caves, there are a lot of caves there, too. Almost everyone who goes to see the Ozarks ends up in Branson, which is the tourist town. There is an amusement park called Silver Dollar City in Branson that gets visited by huge numbers of people every day. If the entry price wasn’t so ridiculous I might pay it and go for a ride but I think I would have to be really rich to pay that kind of money for that sort of entertainment.

But I won a free ticket to Silver Dollar City from a radio station once. They were having some sort of a contest and I was the first person to call and tell them the name of the cave at Silver Dollar City is Marvel Cave; I had never seen Marvel Cave and figured maybe I should, so I took my free ticket and hitch hiked to Branson.I thought Marvel Cave was incredible. The biggest room is called the Devil’s Cathedral, and it does look like the inside of a giant underground cathedral. I also saw bats hanging upside down in the tunnels. I could have touched the bats but the tour guide asked us not to disturb them.

pros and cons
Článek pochází ze skvělé knihy American Thang od Sinclaira Nicholase. Pokud ji ještě nemáte, hybaj do knihkupectví. Původní text mi nicméně přišlo záhodno místy upravit, vyhodit zbytečné popisy krajiny a názvy atrakcí a učinit jej gramaticky přínosnějším.
“The Ozarks” se skládá ze dvou vzájemně příliš nesouvisejících částí – počátek výletu do Ozarks a střet se skunkem – a tak je vhodné jej i podávat; jako dva víceméně oddělené příběhy.
Při citlivém přístupu je text možno použít i při výuce méně pokročilých studentů.
Text se rozbíhá pomalu, je proto nutné aby studenti nenabyli na začátku dojmu, že se bude jednat o nějaké zeměpisné expozé. Ihned na úvod bych proto jako středobod uvedl postavu Sidneyho a až potom bych do vysvětlivek nenásilně vsunul popis krajiny, městečka Branson a zábavního parku Silver Dollar City

That night I slept on a table in a park. I hoped that the police would not disturb me and they did not, but something else did. I was woken up in the night by someone or something making strange noises. When I looked around, I saw a small animal walking towards me; I couldn’t see what it was until it jumped up on the bench next to me.

It turned out to be a skunk. It was sitting a few inches from my face, looking at me. I was afraid it was going to bite my nose, but at the same time I was afraid to move because skunks shoot this terrible stink juice out of their butts; actually it’s more like fog, but it really stinks bad. You can smell a skunk a mile away when it gets run over on the highway.

hints and tips
není od věci při úvodním vysvětlování použít mapu. Missouri a přilehlé státy (mnohé z nich převyšující jak rozlohou, tak počtem obyvatel, tak i hospodářskou výkonností některé evropské země) jsou pro většinu z nás hic sunt leones a přechytřelí středoškoláci, kteří rádi poukazují na geografickou ignoranci obyvatel severní ameriky, by se alespoň mohli trochu chytit za nos.
Stejně jako u všech ostatních textů by ani zde nemělo vysvětlování slovíček být hlavní aktivitou, ani nemluvě o zkoušení ze slovíček, této zrůdnosti pěstované naším školním systémem. Vaším úkolem by mělo naopak být výslovně zamezit tomu, aby se studenti soustředili jenom na slovíčka (kromě vytučněných, ta by znát měli) a směrovat jejich energii na opravdu zajímavé pasáže textu.
pokud bude studentovo improvizované převyprávění obsahu textu na konci sestávat z naučených slovíček pospojovaných dvaceti základními slovesy (přičemž tři ze čtyř použitých jsou be) ve dvou časech (přítomný a minulý, libovolně prohazované podle potřeby) a spojkami and-so-but-because, pak bylo (minimálně z mého pohledu) celé vaše snažení naprostou ztrátou času.
Když už jsme u slovíček, to které je skutečně třeba vysvětlit: záleží samozřejmě na tom, jak pokročilé studenty před sebou máte. Já jsem pro jistotu vypsal všechna slůvka, která je podle mého názoru třeba vysvětlit studentům s malou znalostí angličtiny. Pokročilejší studenti jich většinu budou znát.

The skunk started eating the box of cookies right next to me. I felt angry that this little animal thought it could eat my cookies when I am a human, the greatest creature on earth, the master of all nature. I moved towards the skunk a little and it stopped eating. It raised its tail like it was going to spray me. I didn’t move, I didn’t even breathe. It seemed like we were frozen for a long time, staring at each other.

Then it started eating again. It ate all my cookies, then it ate my cheese, my bread, and some doughnuts I was going to have for breakfast. There was nothing I could do about it. It sat on the bench for a long while, probably resting from its large meal, then it walked off, slowly. I felt like I should call the police, but you can’t when the robber is a skunk. But if you ever go to the Ozarks, watch out for skunks because they are shameless criminals, every one of them.
